The measurement of battery voltage and impedance is, on it’s own, not enough to gauge battery state of health. This is only a gross electrical indicator of battery function. These measurements only provide limited information about battery health and are less than 100% reliable detecting batteries that are near failure. To reduce the cost and risk of ownership, both the electrical and chemical properties of batteries must simultaneously be measured.

The most effective method to detect changes in battery health, is with frequency response analysis. With CELScan™ (Chemical Electrical Layer Scan) Technology, ABT has all the necessary tools and know-how to perform true multi-frequency analysis on all battery types including Lead Acid, NiCd, NiMH, Lithium-Ion and other batteries.

This means that we are able to measure both the Electrical (Impedance & Voltage) and Chemical (Sulfation and Dry-out) properties of Lead Acid batteries (VLA, VRLA, GEL). Relative Degradation of other battery types (NiCd, NiMH, Lithium-Ion and others) can also be measured. CELScan™ directly measures capacity loss due to Sulfation and Dry-out in lead acid batteries – two common points of battery failure that are leading indicators of battery health. This analytical capability has previously only been possible with the use of expensive bench-top test equipment used in laboratories. Today, ABT has this advanced diagnostic capability, giving you the right level of testing when you need it.

Being able to identify bad blocks in a string, allows us to treat each battery as required. Instead of replacing entire battery banks, regular testing or continuous monitoring will allow you to rejuvenate the identified blocks long before they fail. This extends the intended battery life-span and saves money.

Early Detection = Pro-Active Maintenance

Depending on the appetite for risk and how mission-critical the application (hospitals, datacenters etc), test parameters may be adjusted to allow for longer response times. In many cases, CELScan™ allows for up to 3 months to act on warnings and eliminates the need for time consuming load tests.

CELScan™ VS Load Test

In a series of laboratory tests, accelerated ageing tests were performed on sets of VRLA cells and VLA-type batteries. The baseline C/3 capacity of each battery was established at the beginning of life (BOL). Sulfation was artificially induced by lowering the float voltage and raising the temperature. Dry-out was induced in a set of VRLA cells with a flow of nitrogen. After ageing, each battery was fully charged so that capacity losses measured by C/3 load testing could be compared with results predicted by CELScan™.

In all cases, the agreement (expressed as a percentage of nameplate capacity) was within ~3%.

Once sulfated cells are detected, is it the end of the road for them? The answer is NO! ABT has the methods and technology to de-sulfate and rejuvenate batteries back to 100% capacity.
